Your 5% CD Was a Gift. It Is Maturing Into Something Smaller.
The safest money in retirement has a hidden risk nobody labels: the day it matures. A $500,000 ladder built at 5% renewing near 4% quietly cuts $5,000 a year of income — and the paperwork never mentions it.

For two years, cash was the easiest trade in retirement. Money market funds and CDs paid 5%, the principal never moved, and nobody had to explain volatility at the kitchen table. Roughly $7 trillion piled into cash and cash equivalents.
Then rates started coming down. And the risk that nobody printed on the statement showed up: reinvestment risk — the risk that when your safe money matures, the replacement pays less.
The math on a real ladder
A $500,000 CD ladder built at 5% produced $25,000 a year. Renew that same ladder near 4% and it produces $20,000. Nothing was lost. No account went down. Income simply dropped $5,000 a year — about $417 a month — and the only notice was a renewal letter.
For a retiree using interest to cover the fixed bills, that is not a rounding error. That is the property tax quarter.
Why it feels invisible
Stock market losses are loud. Everyone can see them. Reinvestment loss is silent because the principal never flinches — the balance is intact, and the damage shows up only in the cash flow, six or twelve months after the decision that caused it.
The other quiet problem: cash never had an inflation cushion. At 5% with inflation near 3%, the real return was about 2%. At 4% with inflation near 3%, it is about 1% — before tax. And CD and money-market interest is taxed as ordinary income, at your top rate, every single year.
What people are actually doing about it
- Extending duration on purpose. Locking part of the ladder out to 3, 5, or 7 years while yields are still historically decent, instead of rolling everything at 3 months and re-pricing four times a year.
- Separating the buckets. Two years of spending stays short and liquid. Money you will not touch for five years does not belong in a 90-day instrument — that is where the yield is being left on the table.
- Watching where the interest is held. Ordinary-income interest inside a taxable account is the most expensive place to earn a yield. Municipal bonds or holding the interest-bearing assets inside an IRA can change the after-tax result more than chasing another 0.15%.
- Pricing guaranteed income while rates are still high. Products that lock a payout rate — annuities, treasury ladders, structured notes — are priced off today's rates. What is available at 4% is not what will be available at 2.5%.
The point
Cash was never risk-free. It was risk-deferred. The risk arrives on the maturity date, and it arrives as a smaller check rather than a smaller balance, which is exactly why so few people plan for it.
If a meaningful piece of your income comes from CDs, money markets, or Treasury bills, the useful exercise this month is simple: list every maturity date in the next 18 months, write the current rate next to it, and add up what the income becomes if each one renews a full point lower. That number is your actual exposure. Most people have never seen it written down.
Rates cited are illustrative of recent market conditions and change constantly. This is general education, not investment advice.
