Your Medicare Advantage Plan Might Not Exist in January. Insurers Are Walking.
Open enrollment runs October 15 to December 7. Insurers including UnitedHealthcare and Humana are pulling Medicare Advantage plans for 2027 — and the letter telling you so is easy to mistake for junk mail.

The most expensive envelope you will get this fall looks exactly like the twelve worthless ones next to it.
Medicare open enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, 2026, for coverage starting January 1, 2027. If your Medicare Advantage plan is being discontinued in your county, you find out by mail — usually in a "Annual Notice of Change" that people throw away.
Which insurers are cutting Medicare Advantage plans for 2027?
Reporting through August 2026 points to another year of pullbacks:
- UnitedHealthcare's preliminary 2027 plan, per reporting on August 18, 2026, would end Medicare Advantage coverage in 34 counties across 12 states.
- Humana confirmed at the end of July 2026 that it is ending select Medicare Advantage plans for 2027.
How many people get displaced is genuinely unsettled. The 2026 cycle moved roughly 2.6 million Medicare Advantage enrollees. Estimates for 2027 range from around 600,000 to claims of nearly 3 million, depending on who is counting. Anyone quoting one confident number in August is guessing — CMS non-renewal data is not fully public until closer to October.
What happens if my plan is discontinued?
You do not lose Medicare. You lose that plan. You get a special enrollment right to pick something else, and if you do nothing you generally revert to Original Medicare — which has no out-of-pocket maximum and no drug coverage unless you add Part D.
"Do nothing" is the option that quietly costs the most.
What is changing on the drug side?
The Inflation Reduction Act's $2,000 annual out-of-pocket cap on covered prescription drugs took effect January 1, 2025, and it is indexed upward each year — so the 2027 number will be higher again. Do not lock a figure in your head from a marketing site; the official Part D parameters come from CMS. CMS issued the Contract Year 2027 Medicare Advantage and Part D final rule on April 2, 2026, with the rate announcement published that same week.
What should you check before December 7?
- Open the mail. Specifically the Annual Notice of Change. That is where a discontinuation is disclosed.
- Re-check your drugs against the 2027 formulary — plans that survive still move drugs between tiers.
- Re-check your doctors. Network changes do not require the plan to disappear.
- Compare total cost, not premium. A $0 premium plan with a bad specialist copay is not a $0 plan.
- Consider whether you can still get a Medigap policy. Outside your initial guaranteed-issue window, medical underwriting may apply in many states. That door narrows with age.
The take: Medicare Advantage was sold as convenience. Convenience that can exit your county with 60 days notice is a product feature you should price accordingly.
