Lobster Dumplings & French Onion Soup
Char Steakhouse · Red Bank, NJ

Because after 55, life's too short for bad dumplings and skimpy soup.
The Spot
Next up on the Worth The Cheat list: Char Steakhouse at 33 Broad Street in Red Bank, New Jersey. If you've been anywhere near Monmouth County, you already know the name. What you might not know is the little routine Jennifer and I have built around this place — and why it's earned a permanent spot in our cheat-day rotation.
The Routine
We roll in around 4:00 PM, grab two stools at the bar, and settle in. That's the move. Skip the dining room, skip the reservation shuffle, and let the bartenders take care of you. There's something about a quiet steakhouse bar in the late afternoon — the light coming through the windows, a good cocktail in hand, and the kitchen just starting to hum for the night. That's the whole vibe.
And here's the kicker: if you catch happy hour, you're getting ½ off the happy hour menu. Same food, same bar, same great service — half the damage. That, my friends, is the beginning of a very worth-it cheat.
The Main Event: Lobster Dumplings
Let me be direct. Jennifer and I have made it a bit of a personal mission to try the Lobster Dumplings at just about every restaurant in the area that serves them. We've done the tour. We've compared notes. And I'll tell you plainly:
Char's Lobster Dumplings are, hands down, the best in the area. It's not even close.
The ingredients are almost deceptively simple — lobster, homemade Calabrian chili crisp, and soy. But two things separate these from every other version in town:
1. The wrapper. Perfectly thin, delicate, and clean. Not thick. Not doughy. Not gummy. The wrapper is doing exactly what a dumpling wrapper is supposed to do — hold the party together without crashing it.
2. The filling. This is where most places fumble. They either skimp on the lobster or drown it in filler. Char nails the balance. You don't get chunky lobster bites. The lobster is blended into a smooth, rich filling, so the flavor is dialed in — sweet, briny, buttery, with just enough of that chili-crisp heat curling in behind it.
Order one plate to "share." Then order another. You'll thank me.
The Sleeper Hit: French Onion Soup
Now, every time this soup comes to the bar, Jennifer and I have the exact same conversation:
"Is it really worth all the extra calories? All that gooey cheese?"
And every single time, the answer comes back the same:
YES. 100%. Every time.
This isn't just soup. This is a flavor bomb in a crock. Char's French Onion is built with:
- Spanish sherry — for that deep, nutty, slightly sweet backbone
- Gruyère cheese — melted, bubbling, browned on top the way it should be
- Crouton — perfectly toasted, soaking up the broth without turning to mush
The broth is rich without being heavy, the onions are properly caramelized (not just browned — there's a difference), and that Gruyère crust on top is exactly the kind of thing you're not "supposed to" eat. Which is precisely why you should.
100% worth the cheat.
The Verdict
Char Steakhouse at the bar, 4:00 PM, happy hour prices, Lobster Dumplings and French Onion Soup — that's the play. It's not fancy, it's not complicated, and it doesn't need to be. It's just two people who've been together long enough to know exactly what they want, sitting at a great bar, eating great food, and not overthinking it.
That's what Second Act 360 is really about, isn't it? Knowing what you like. Knowing what's worth it. And not apologizing for the cheat.
