Wild Horses, a Private Wave and Nobody Else: Inside Nihi Sumba, the Resort That Ruined Every Other Beach for Us
Twice named the best hotel in the world, Nihi Sumba sits on an Indonesian island twice the size of Bali with a fraction of its visitors. Here is how to get there, which villa to pick, when to go and what it really costs.

Picture this: the sun is dropping into the Indian Ocean, a bottle of house wine is open on your deck, and a string of horses comes galloping down a mile and a half of empty sand. Not a tour. Not a show. That is just Tuesday at Nihi Sumba.
This is spot #5 from our 10 Places the People-in-the-Know Actually Go, and honestly, it might be the one that makes you call your travel agent tonight. Nihi sits on Sumba, an Indonesian island its owners describe as twice the size of Bali with a fraction of the visitors. Bali is the crowded party. Sumba is the house down the road where everyone actually wants to end up.
It remains the only hotel in Travel + Leisure history named the #1 Hotel in the World two years running — 2016 and 2017. And it has somehow stayed quiet anyway.
The résumé is ridiculous
Most resorts brag about one award. Nihi's 2026 fact sheet reads like a trophy case: #10 on The World's 50 Best Hotels in 2024, #7 on Robb Report's greatest luxury hotels in 2025, Tatler's Hotel of the Year for Indonesia, and Three MICHELIN Keys for the second year in a row in 2026. Condé Nast Traveler readers had it as the #1 resort in Indonesia.
And yet it is tiny: 31 villas and estates, 51 rooms total, every one with a private pool, spread across about 270 hectares (roughly 670 acres) of land along 2.5 kilometers of private beach. The resort says 93% of its staff are local Sumbanese. You are not in a corporate chain with a fresh coat of island paint. You are somewhere real.
The wave you will never ride (and that's fine)
Surfers whisper about Occy's Left, the left-hand break right in front of the resort. Access is famously limited to a small number of guest surf slots a day, which is why surf legends treat it like a holy site. Here's the beautiful part for the rest of us: you don't have to surf to enjoy it. Several villas look straight at the wave from the plunge pool. Watching 20-somethings wipe out while you hold an iced coffee is, we'd argue, the superior experience.
If you do want in the water, Nihi offers surf lessons at gentler Coconut Cove, plus stand-up paddle boarding and snorkeling off Nihiwatu Beach when conditions allow.
Picking your villa: the decision that matters
No two villas are alike, which is wonderful and also means you need to ask questions. A sampling of what's on the menu:
- Marangga — a one-bedroom on the coastline with private grounds and the ocean in front of you. Classic couples pick.
- Mandaka Surf — one bedroom with direct access to the resort's Boathouse.
- The Treehouse — three elevated king bedrooms in an ancient forest with Indian Ocean views. Bring the grandkids, become a legend.
- Marangga Family Estate — four bedrooms for up to eight adults and two children. The "we're doing the big anniversary trip with everybody" option.
- Raja Mandaka — the crown jewel, a two-bedroom principal residence with uninterrupted coastline views.
Now the grown-up advice. This is a hilly, jungle-edged property, and words like "elevated," "duplex" and "set high above" are code for stairs. Before you book, ask reservations:
- How many steps from the villa to the restaurant, beach and arrival point?
- Is the main bedroom on the ground level? Duplexes often put it upstairs.
- Is a buggy or car available on request?
- Is the shower walk-in, and are there grab bars?
The resort doesn't publish detailed accessibility information on its villa pages, so get specific answers in writing rather than assuming.
The inclusions are where this gets interesting
Here's what surprises people: Nihi is far closer to all-inclusive than most luxury resorts. According to its published rates and inclusions, your stay covers:
- Three meals a day plus all non-alcoholic drinks
- Round-trip airport transfer in a shared safari car
- An in-villa minibar, fully restocked once a day
- Laundry and Wi-Fi
- "Happiest Hour," 5:30 to 6:30 every evening, with free-flowing domestic beer and house wine
- Padel and pickleball courts (yes, pickleball, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.)
- Group yoga and meditation, weekly activities, and a tour of the Sumba Foundation's projects
That changes the math. A nightly rate that looks eye-watering next to a room-only hotel starts looking more reasonable once you stop paying for every lunch and cocktail.
Spa Safari, horses and the stuff you'll talk about for years
Nihi's Spa Safari is the experience people bring home as a story: a trek out to a cliffside spa retreat for a full day of treatments overlooking the ocean. Its spa was ranked #3 in the Asia-Pacific by Travel + Leisure readers in 2025.
The horses are the resort's signature. Riding lessons are offered, and "Polo by the Sea" is part of the activity lineup. Then there's the heart of the place: the Sumba Foundation, which the resort describes as funding community projects on the island. The complimentary tour is worth your morning. It's the difference between visiting an island and actually meeting it.
Note that Spa Safari, horseback riding, boat trips and hikes are extra, with a 24-hour cancellation policy, and all activity prices carry a 21% tax and service charge.
Getting there: plan it like a pro
There's no way to sugarcoat it: this is a long trip from New Jersey. You fly to Bali (DPS) first, then take a roughly one-hour domestic flight to Tambolaka (TMC) on Sumba. The resort notes the Bali–Sumba flights run on a morning schedule, with one example departing at 9:10 a.m. and landing at 10:10 a.m.
- Overnight in Bali on the way in. The resort itself recommends it. Landing from the U.S. and sprinting to a morning domestic flight is not how anyone over 55 should start a dream vacation.
- Pick a smooth long-haul carrier. Nihi points U.S. travelers to Singapore Airlines, Emirates and Qatar Airways for the cleanest connections into Bali.
- Check your passport today. Indonesia requires at least six months remaining validity and a full blank page for the visa-on-arrival stamp. The resort warns this is strictly enforced and you can be denied boarding.
- Watch out for Nyepi. Bali's Day of Silence falls on March 9, 2027, and Bali's airport closes for the entire day. Travel a day before or after.
- Let the resort's Travel Designers book the domestic leg. Schedules change; let the people who deal with it daily absorb the headache.
When to go
Nihi publishes three seasons. For 2026:
- Green Season (best value): January 12–March 31 and November 1–20.
- High Season: April 1–June 30, September 1–October 31, and December 21–28.
- Peak Season: July 1–August 31 and December 29 through January 7, 2027.
Our take: the spring and fall High Season windows are the sweet spot — away from summer family crowds and holiday pricing, and you won't be competing with every surfer on the planet for the July–August swell.
What it really costs
This is a once-in-a-lifetime splurge, full stop. Nihi doesn't publish a simple "from" price on its rates page, and every rate is subject to a 21% government tax and service charge on top. Ask reservations@nihi.com for a written quote covering your villa, dates, taxes, any third-guest surcharge, and the activities you actually want.
Then build the real number: long-haul flights, the Bali overnight both ways, the domestic legs, travel insurance with medical evacuation coverage, and a cushion for the Spa Safari you will absolutely book once you're there.
The nightly rate is not your trip cost. Your trip cost is front door to front door — and the smartest travelers decide that number before they fall in love with a villa.
A word on health and remoteness
Sumba is remote, and that's the whole point. It also means you should plan like a grown-up. Check whether your health insurance (including Medicare, which generally doesn't cover care abroad) works overseas, buy a travel policy that includes medical evacuation, carry extra prescription medication in original labeled bottles, and talk to your doctor about recommended travel vaccines well before departure.
Who will love Nihi Sumba
- Couples marking a big anniversary who want "we'll never forget this" rather than "that was nice."
- Grandparents planning the multigenerational trip of a lifetime (hello, Treehouse).
- Travelers who want adventure with a safety net — horses, surf and jungle, then a turndown service.
- Anyone who cares where their money goes; the local staffing and foundation work are real parts of the story.
Who should skip it
- Anyone who hates long flights or tight connections.
- Travelers who need flat, step-free grounds.
- People who want nightlife, shopping and a different restaurant every night — that's Bali, and it's a flight away.
Nihi Sumba is the kind of place you save for. And if you're mapping out how a trip like this fits into your retirement budget, that's exactly the sort of planning we cover in our Retirement Webinar — because the best second act includes a few wild horses on the beach.
