RMD questions, answered

When do I have to start taking RMDs?

At 73 if you were born from 1951 through 1959, and at 75 if you were born in 1960 or later. Your first RMD can wait until April 1 of the following year, but then you must take two in that year.

How is my RMD calculated?

Take your account balance on December 31 of last year and divide it by the IRS divisor for the age you reach this year. At 73 the divisor is 26.5, so a $500,000 IRA needs about $18,868.

What happens if I miss an RMD?

The IRS can charge a 25% excise tax on the amount you didn't take. It drops to 10% if you correct it in time, usually within two years. File Form 5329.

Do Roth IRAs have RMDs?

Not for the original owner. That's one reason Roth conversions before RMD age can lower your future required withdrawals.

Can I give my RMD to charity?

Yes. From age 70½, a qualified charitable distribution sent straight from your IRA to a charity can count toward your RMD and stay out of your taxable income.
